Guest Comments

Almost all of our guests have taken the time to record some comments in our guest book regarding their stay in our Carolina Cabin. We selected a few from the last 3 years that we think prospective guests would find interesting and informative. We have omitted last names and addresses to protect the privacy of our guests.

March 2002

When we walked into the cabin it was more beautiful then I could imagine.  Immediately it felt warm and cozy, which made you feel right at home.  The view was awesome. There was no snow when we arrived, but Wednesday morning when we woke up, everything was white and pristine. Something Florida people don’t see too often.

The skiing was good and we didn’t break any bones.  We are getting ready to leave this morning but it’s snowing again!  I love it!

Thanks so much for the use of your home, I was a wonderful vacation and we hope to return.  Oh yeah!  The scale in the bathroom is the best scale ever!  Thanks again.

February 2002

The moment I walked in and saw the quilts--I felt right at home.  I even made 25 blocks of my own during this week.

We came for snow and didn’t see a flake but we enjoyed every minute anyway.  We visited Valle Cruces, Banner Elk, Beech, Grandfather Mountain, Blowing Rock and ice skating at Appalachian Ski Resort.  We even took a ride to Winston-Salem for the “Old Salem Village” (great place to visit).

We loved the home and it was so comfortable to come back to after running around.  We have stayed in many B&B’s and cabins but yours is certainly the greatest. We look forward to our revisit and will certainly keep in touch.  Don’t change a thing, everything is perfect!

December 2001

What a wonderful way to have a cozy, cold Christmas!! This was one we will always remember as it is our first time to spend it away from home.  Thank you for a lovely and homey, warm place to be spending this holiday together.

We have enjoyed the fires and the amenities of a well stocked home away from home.  Never have I rented a place to spend a vacation and had everything you need, but your clothes and personal items.  The family went tubing at “Hawksnest” yesterday and enjoyed it tremendously.  The only complaint was there was only one slope open and Katie says do not go tubing in your tennis shoes even though they are leather and wear “thick” warm socks.

Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year.  Thanks again for sharing your home with others.  May God bless and keep you.

Grannie Ann

P.S.  We woke up to snow today that we are leaving.

P.P.S.  Thanks for the rocking chair.  I sure enjoyed it.

November 2001

This cabin is very comfortably appointed.  We felt right at home as soon as we arrived! We enjoyed visiting Biltmore, dining at Grove Park and spending a day strolling around downtown Asheville.  We also spent a day hiking around the Pisgah forest around Linville Falls.  Mast General Store and all of the shops and galleries around Foscoe have absolutely impeccable charm!

After a week here, Alicia and I have finally been able to relax and reconstruct our perspective on daily life.  I spent some time writing, something I haven’t been able to do in quite some time!

Thanks for providing a comfortable atmosphere for us to escape and to simply unwind for a little while.

We needed a place to get a way from the hustle and bustle of daily life.  Your home away from home was our salvation.  Thank you for giving us a reprieve. It’s been a blessing.

The things that stand out in our minds that we adored this week are:  the playful chipmunks, the winding roads, the awesome colors (in the beginning of the week), the very top of Mt. Mitchell, the fireplace, the mystery puzzle, stone walls (and the rendezvous with a couple we hadn’t seen in 7 years--it was a surprise for my birthday), breakfast @ sunrise in Boone, Mast General store in Valle Cruces, the hominess of the cabin, and the completeness of the kitchen.  The view from the deck is really super; as the leaves fall, Grandfather Mountain emerges.  Blowing Rock was fun too.  The neighborhood is great for walking and picture taking.

Thank you for the opportunity to see the mountains and experience a different way of life for a week.

We laughed a lot this week and I’m not convinced that it wasn’t something in the air.  We leave for Naples with our souls recharged.

Janice, did you make the cover on the guest book?  It is really professionally done and intriguingly charming. Did you make any of the delightful quilts--or the dishtowel with the house zig zagged on it?  Must confess, I traced it to copy.  I couldn’t find a copyright patent.  You have so many interesting & charming items throughout the house.  Only one I can’t fathom--the white square piece of padding in the master bedroom???? Love the quilted birds with the birdhouses all around them in the small bathroom.  Milton and I are ardent birdwatchers birdwatchers and have traveled the world doing this.

Forget that tub.  We didn’t come here to go swimming.  While we were here, our eldest son celebrated his 58th birthday.  Fortunately he remained in Louisiana so we weren’t too harshly reminded of how old we are.  Other than that we had a marvelous time.  We walked up & down all over the neighborhood every day & even as far as the golf club.  We played golf, loved the course, and on it felt totally cuddled by the glory of the trees all around us. We’ve spent many Octobers in the mountains but have never seen them as magnificent as they are now--at their peak.  The house is very comfortable and well equipped with all the little things you need for every day living but don’t take on a trip.  Only thing wrong is that the Ferguson’s don’t supply a helicopter to take their guests to and from the Tyneville Mall.

The cabin is even better than we remembered! And we especially love the new entryway: a perfect plan for this setting.

Our week has been delightful--a little shopping and looking around, but mostly just reading and relaxing-just the right preparation for a busy Fall.

We’re looking forward to coming back.

We chose your cabin for our annual trip for Mother’s Day.  Even though we are very diverse, we all agreed it was a wonderful place to stay.  We enjoyed a little piece of heaven in your cabin in the sky.  Debbie enjoyed it more after she realized she was not going off the cliff, nor was she going to die.

Relaxing in the hot tub was a delightful end to each and every day.  Dena wore out her back seat imaginary brake on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  We felt right at home with all the heartfelt personal touches.  This cabin made a great Mom’s getaway that we needed so much.  It helped us clear our minds and prepare for another year.  The peace and solitude helped us bond our friendships, which we hold so dear.

The whitewater rafting at first was scary and although not by choice, the rapids decided Michelle was the one to bail.  In order to get Carol in that raft and on those rapids we had to beg. Tammy thoroughly enjoyed her ride even though she broke her leg. There was a point we thought we were sunk, only to be saved by those cute little river rapid guide hunks!

All in all, between the rapids adventure, the wonderful restaurants, beautiful scenery and this cozy warm cabin, we all concur we will come back again!

We walked into your home and felt like we could stay forever.  Our children loved the loft.  I (Theresa) love the quilts and my husband built a great fire every night.  The personal touches to your home make it the best vacation home we have ever stayed.

We had three beautiful days of hiking with snow on the ground.  Grandfather Mountain was “totally awesome.”  It was the most challenging mountain hiking we ever tried.

Thank you for your hospitality.

What a fab-u-lous!!! time we had.  Such a cozy place this is!!  Skiing, sledding& ice skating are always fun.  But having a cozy home to come back to when your toes are frozen makes for an ideal vacation.  And who would have thought just relaxing and doing nothing in a cabin would be a highlight in itself!  Now we have to go home and brag to all our friends, family & co-workers of the little piece of heaven we found in Banner Elk @ Cliffside Lane.

Thank you for our memories,

Dave, Deanna, Corey, Chase, Brandi & Baby-on the way

Thanks for the use of your wonderful mountain home.  We had a great vacation.  Only snowed one day--but we discovered ice skating this year to keep the kids happy. This is our fifth year coming up here--and our second year in your cabin--and we’ve been spoiled by the wonderful snowfalls of the past.  But your place is so cozy and picturesque; we enjoyed just simply lighting a fire and playing games. The kids hiked up the mountain a couple of time and had a ball.

Thanks for sharing your place with so many folks.

We had a great time in your beautiful cabin!  We’ve been up to NW North Carolina many years and we all voted this to be one of the best places we have stayed.  Along with the location, your cabin is set apart!

Thank you for all the great communications in making arrangements!!

We had many fun filled days skiing, tubing, shopping and site seeing.  My sister & I even spent a whole day relaxing inside while we enjoyed the scenery of new snow falling!

Our son, 9,  loved Hawksnest a lot!  I think your jacuzzi was his next favorite.  We hope to come back next year.

Take care,

Lori, Dave and David

Thank you, Bob and Janice, for the use of your home.  We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the cozy home to come home to after busy days of skiing tubing and shopping.  We were thrilled to have gotten snow 3 times--exactly what we hoped for since where we are from we barely even get cold weather.  We plan to return to the area next year so you may not have heard the last of us!  Thanks again.

Kim and Nick

By the way, shopping in Blowing Rock was great--what a cute place!

Thank you both so much for the beautiful cabin!  After receiving all those e-mail pictures, the real thing is a million times more awesome!

It has snowed for the past 2 ˝ days and we are loving it!  We visited Ski Beech and went tubing and even bought a sled at Fred’s and went sledding down the driveway.  John went skiing at Hawksnest until 2:00 a.m. and had a blast! We will be coming back!

Thanks again,

Dear Janice and Bob,

Kurt & Charlotte, Patrick & Sandy, Dave, Charlie & Carol.  Wow, what a crew, and what a great place for the crew.  Sandy & Patrick ushered in a 5th anniversary & a next thousand years with friends and family in your special mountain home. Thanks for all the special touches that made us all feel at home.  It was 7 days of total contemplation & relaxation that we all needed.  It was so nice we are considering becoming permanent neighbors on your mountain.

Thanks again for all the warmth, especially the Christmas tree.  It made it special.

Thank you for sharing your beautifully appointed home with us.  It was, indeed, a joy to “return to nature” for a while and experience the peace, serenity and feeling of well being such a setting brings.  The cabin offers all the amenities of home.  We had a wonderful respite from our usual “rat race”!  We hope to return again in the future.

Well, we’re done with the “Northern” portion of our trip.  Now we’re on to Charleston, SC, then home to FL.

We’ve had a great time at this cabin in the woods.  Waking up to singing birds and cool temps, having coffee on the deck and then heading out for day trips has been “just what the doctor ordered. “

We’ve shopped till we dropped, hiked the trails, rafted the rivers, and golfed the courses.  You could do everything or nothing--the perfect vacation formula.

Everyone is very friendly and we’ve actually made Florida friends we met on our rafting trip. We love this place and hope to return (maybe as homeowners). Our thanks to Bob and Janice for providing this retreat from our hectic Florida lives.

You have a really great place here.  Thanks for sharing it!  We loved the jacuzzi, big bed and all the quilts!  We went to Boone, Banner Elk and Blowing Rock several times.  The Biltmore in Asheville was my favorite.  The temperature here was great (it started out a chilly 40 degrees!) --temperatures in the 70’s are such a relief from the 95-100 degree temps back home.

I want to tell you too, that the people here are so nice and thoughtful.  We had car trouble one night in Boone and 6 people stopped to offer us help!  The next day all the businesses we had to deal with were very friendly and helpful also. This is a great place.  Just the relaxing vacation we were planning on.

We close with a poem written back in August 1997 by Jonathan Jay and Mary Beth:

"We came here all withered and smit,
saw the cabin and it was a hit,
played some golf and went for a hike,
Got a slice and pulled a muscle,
I love this place it's so far from the hustle.
If you read this poem it means you're here,
so sit down, relax, and have a beer,
you found your way to the top of the mountain,
so take a deep breath of air from life's fountain.
Now we are leaving but we will be back,
because this place is as close to heaven as we will ever get!"
